About Zara
Zara is a Spanish fast-fashion retailer founded in 1975 in A Coruña, Spain, by Amancio Ortega and Rosalía Mera. It is the flagship brand of Inditex, the world’s largest apparel retailer. The name was almost “Zorba,” after the film Zorba the Greek — the letters on the original store sign were rearranged when a nearby bar already used that name. Zara pioneered ultra-fast fashion: designs move from sketch to store shelves in a matter of weeks, with new stock arriving multiple times a week.
Zara Logo Meaning and History
Zara’s identity is a pure typographic wordmark — an elegant, high-contrast uppercase serif set with wide letter-spacing, evoking luxury fashion houses rather than fast-fashion rivals. While most fashion brands rebranded in the late 2010s toward minimal sans-serif logos, Zara went the opposite direction: its 2019 redesign by Baron & Baron (artistic director Fabien Baron) squeezed the letters into overlapping, curvy forms with dramatic flourishes on the “Z” and “R,” recalling the typography Baron created for Harper’s Bazaar in the 1990s. The result is a more editorial, couture-like mark that keeps Zara visually distinct.
Evolution of the Zara Logo
- 1975: Launch — a spaced-out uppercase serif wordmark with wide letter-spacing.
- 2010: First redesign — a subtle refinement of the spacing and letterforms.
- 2017: The new overlapping, curvy serif logo debuts in the Spring/Summer campaign, used alongside the previous mark.
- 2019: On January 25, 2019 the Baron & Baron redesign becomes Zara’s official logo, still in use today.
Zara Logo Colors and Font
Zara’s logo is strictly monochrome — black (#000000) lettering on white, occasionally reversed. The typeface is a Didot-style high-contrast serif, defined by its tall letters, tight overlapping kerning, and the signature curved legs of the “Z” and “R.”
