WhatsApp is the messaging app that made free text and voice chat universal. Founded on February 24, 2009, by Jan Koum and Brian Acton, it grew from a simple iPhone status app into the world’s most-used messenger. Facebook acquired it for US$19 billion in 2014; it now operates under Meta with billions of users across 180+ countries.
Its identity has stayed stable: a white handset inside a green speech bubble, a picture that says “messaging” in any language.
The logo is deliberately literal. The speech bubble is the universal symbol of conversation, and the receiver inside signals real-time communication. In 2009, when smartphones were new, that clarity explained the app at a glance.
Unlike most tech brands, WhatsApp never had a dramatic redesign. The mark evolved only through quiet refinements: early icons carried the “WhatsApp” name on a green header, but the standalone green bubble became the global icon, with flattening and proportion tweaks.
The palette is built on green and white, suggesting freshness and trust. The primary brand green is #25D366, supported by dark teal (#075E54) and mid teal (#128C7E). The interface adds light green (#DCF8C6) for outgoing bubbles and sand (#ECE5DD) for the chat background.
The icon carries no lettering, so there is no signature display typeface; the wordmark has been set in a neutral sans-serif, with no specific public font name documented.
