Tesla was founded in 2003 as Tesla Motors by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, named after the pioneering inventor Nikola Tesla and his groundbreaking work on alternating current. Elon Musk joined soon after by leading the company’s first major funding round in 2004 and became CEO in 2008. After launching the Roadster sports car in 2008, Tesla released the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y – a lineup Musk has described as spelling “S3XY.” Renamed simply Tesla in 2017, the company has become the world’s best-known electric vehicle and clean energy brand.
The Tesla emblem is far more than a stylized letter “T” – it is a clever technical drawing. As Elon Musk explained in 2017, the mark depicts the cross-section of an electric motor: the main body of the “T” represents one of the poles protruding from the rotor, while the curved bar on top represents a piece of the stator. The name itself honors Nikola Tesla, whose research on electromagnetism made the electric motor – and by extension Tesla’s entire business – possible.
Tesla’s logo is most commonly shown in black, silver, or white, reinforcing the brand’s futuristic, premium image, with red accents used for dynamic and performance contexts. Black stands for luxury and modernity, while silver reflects technology and clean energy. The wordmark uses a custom minimalist typeface with a futuristic feel – note that the letters “E” and “A” have no vertical strokes, giving the name a distinctive, engineered appearance.
