About the Sprite Logo

Introduction

A slanted green wordmark with a big round dot over the “i” — the Sprite logo is the face of the world’s best-known lemon-lime soda, Coca-Cola’s answer to 7 Up that grew into one of the biggest soft drink brands on the planet.

Brand Overview

Sprite is a clear, caffeine-free lemon-lime soft drink created by The Coca-Cola Company. The drink was developed in West Germany in 1959 as “Fanta Klare Zitrone” (Clear Lemon Fanta) and introduced in the United States in 1961 under the Sprite name, positioned directly against 7 Up. The Sprite name itself was created around 1955 by Houston bottler T. C. “Bud” Evans, and Coca-Cola acquired the rights in 1960. Headquartered with Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia, Sprite is now sold in more than 190 countries and ranks among the world’s best-selling sodas.

History of the Sprite Logo

The first Sprite logo of 1961 set the name in bold lettering with a greenish-yellow star in place of the dot over the “i” — the burst that still defines the brand. Through the 1960s and 1970s the lettering grew smoother and bolder, and in 1984 a yellow-green lemon took over as the dot. The 1989 version, with its slanted wordmark and lemon-lime slice, became one of the most recognizable soda marks ever made. A silver-framed redesign followed in 2006, then the 2019 logo placed the wordmark inside a green starburst frame. In 2022 Sprite simplified everything: the frame disappeared, the lettering became heavier and rounder, and the lemon was replaced by a single large dot — the cleanest version of the logo yet, and the one in use today.

Meaning of the Logo

  • The green: Lemon-lime freshness — the color of the drink’s flavor and its famous green bottle, instantly signaling citrus and refreshment.
  • The big dot: Descended from the original star and lemon over the “i”, the dot reads as a burst of flavor and a drop of soda — Sprite’s sparkle in a single shape.
  • The slant: The forward-leaning, rounded lettering gives the wordmark energy and youth, matching the brand’s playful, thirst-quenching personality.

Sprite Logo Colors

Color Hex Code Usage
Sprite Green #00A84E The current wordmark — primary brand color
Deep Sprite Green #008B47 The 2019 star-frame logo and packaging accents
White #FFFFFF Reversed applications on green fields and bottles

The all-green identity runs across Sprite’s bottles, cans, and advertising worldwide — one of the most color-consistent brands in the Coca-Cola portfolio.

Conclusion

Sprite’s logo has kept the same recipe for sixty years — green, slanted, and bursting — refining the shapes without ever losing the fizz.
