Sony was founded in 1946 in Tokyo by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, starting as a modest electronics repair shop. In 1958 the company adopted the name Sony, coined from the Latin “sonus” (sound) and the nickname “sonny boys.” It went on to popularize the Walkman, the Trinitron television, the compact disc, and the PlayStation.
Sony’s logo is a masterclass in restraint: unlike most technology brands, its wordmark has stayed essentially unchanged for decades. According to designer Yasuo Kuroki, the black lettering was meant to communicate strength and simplicity. In 1981 Sony invited designers worldwide to propose a new logo, received nearly 30,000 entries — and kept the existing one anyway.
The Sony logo is typically rendered in solid black, occasionally in silver or white on products. Its letterforms are a classic slab-serif style matching Clarendon. The disciplined, unchanging design — black letters, no icon, no gradient — is precisely the point, making it one of the most studied corporate identities in the world.
