About Slack

Slack is a business messaging and collaboration platform developed by Slack Technologies. It began as an internal communication tool at Tiny Speck, the game studio of Stewart Butterfield, Eric Costello, Cal Henderson, and Serguei Mourachov, while the team built the online game Glitch. Slack launched to the public in August 2013 and grew into one of the fastest-adopted enterprise software products in history. The name is a backronym for “Searchable Log of All Conversation and Knowledge.” Slack went public via a direct listing in June 2019, and Salesforce completed its $27.7 billion acquisition of the company in July 2021.

Slack Logo Meaning and History

The original Slack logo, used from the 2013 launch, was a colorful plaid “hash” mark in four bright colors beside a rounded lowercase wordmark — a playful nod to chat channels, which are denoted by the # symbol. In January 2019 the company unveiled a major rebrand: a simplified pinwheel-like mark of four interlocking lozenge shapes, evoking both a speech bubble and a loading spinner, set against a deep aubergine background. The redesign kept the friendly spirit while making the mark far more legible at small sizes.
