About Samsung
Samsung was founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul as a small trading company in South Korea. After entering electronics in the 1960s, it became one of the world’s largest technology companies, known for Galaxy smartphones, televisions, memory chips, and display panels. “Samsung” combines the Korean words for “three” (sam) and “star” (sung).
Logo Meaning and History
For most of its modern history, Samsung’s logo centered on a wordmark inside a tilted ellipse. The blue conveys reliability, while the ellipse — inclined at about ten degrees — represents the Earth revolving around the Sun: a symbol of dynamism and global ambition. In 2005 the lettermark was refined into a sleeker wordmark that could stand on its own.
Evolution
- 1938: The first Samsung logo showed the company name in Korean script on product packaging, reflecting its origins as a Korean trading company.
- 1969: Expanding beyond Korea, Samsung adopted a western-style logo with the name in English for the first time, inside a tilted blue ellipse.
- 1979: The wordmark was refined with slimmer, more compact lettering to match the launch of Samsung’s color televisions.
- 1993: The definitive modern identity arrived: a custom wordmark with the “A” drawn without a crossbar, inside a blue ellipse tilted at ten degrees.
- 2005: Samsung sharpened and simplified the lettermark for the digital age, dropping the ellipse so the wordmark could stand alone.
Colors and Font
The official brand color is Samsung Blue, HEX #1428A0 (PMS 286C, RGB 20/40/160), chosen to communicate trust. The lettermark is a custom typeface similar to Helvetica Black, with the “A” drawn without its horizontal bar and the “S” and “G” slightly open — details Samsung says symbolize openness.
