About Philips
Philips is a Dutch health-technology company founded in 1891 by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik Philips in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. It began as Philips & Co., a small factory making reliable incandescent light bulbs, and grew into one of the world’s best-known electronics companies before reinventing itself around healthcare. Its headquarters moved to Amsterdam in 1997, and it received the royal designation Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. in 1998. Today Philips focuses on diagnostic imaging, patient monitoring, sleep and respiratory care, and personal health products, with a mission of improving three billion lives a year.
Logo Meaning and History
The Philips emblem is a shield bearing a row of stars above horizontal wavy lines. Designed by Dutch architect Louis Kalff, the wavy lines represent radio waves traveling through the air, while the stars suggest broadcast reach, a nod to the company’s growing radio business. First used on stationery and advertising in the 1920s, the shield was formally adopted as the corporate emblem in the 1930s and has anchored the brand ever since, always paired with the blue PHILIPS wordmark.
Evolution
- 1891: Philips & Co. launched with simple typographic branding for its light bulbs, with no emblem.
- 1925: The stars-and-waves motif appeared on stationery and promotional materials, representing radio waves and the company’s entry into radio technology.
- 1934: Louis Kalff’s shield emblem was officially adopted, combining the stars, waves, and shield into one badge.
- 1968: The wordmark was modernized into a clean, custom sans-serif PHILIPS, presented alongside the classic shield.
- 2013: On November 13, 2013, Philips unveiled a redesigned shield with two waves instead of three, created with Interbrand, marking the shift to the “Innovation and You” positioning and its health-technology future.
Colors and Font
The Philips identity is built on Philips blue, a deep corporate blue frequently matched to around #0B1C48, set against white. The blue communicates trust, heritage, and clinical reliability. The wordmark is custom lettering with a rounded, humanist sans-serif style introduced in the 2008 and 2013 refinements.
