About Panasonic
Panasonic is a Japanese multinational electronics corporation founded in 1918 by Kōnosuke Matsushita in Osaka. It began as Matsushita Electric Housewares Manufacturing Works, a tiny workshop producing improved electric lamp sockets, and grew into one of Japan’s industrial giants, pioneering products from bicycle lamps and radios to televisions, rice cookers, and microwave ovens. Today Panasonic Holdings Corporation, based in Kadoma, Osaka, operates across consumer electronics, home appliances, automotive systems, batteries, and industrial solutions.
Logo Meaning and History
The Panasonic wordmark is a simple blue logotype whose name carries the brand story: “Pan” comes from the Greek root meaning “all” or “universal,” while “sonic” refers to sound, expressing the goal of bringing the company’s sound to customers around the world. The name was first coined in 1955 for a line of speakers designed for overseas export, chosen because the domestic “National” brand was already trademarked in the United States.
Evolution
- 1918: The company was founded as Matsushita Electric, using simple typographic marks and the three-diamond Matsushita badge.
- 1927: The “National” brand name was introduced for bicycle lamps, becoming the main consumer brand for decades.
- 1955: The “Panasonic” name was created for export speakers, fusing “pan” (universal) with “sonic” (sound), and styled as “Pana Sonic”.
- 1965: The National N-mark treatment was applied to Panasonic, and the space was dropped from the name, giving the single word “Panasonic”.
- 1971: In April 1971 the modern blue wordmark was introduced, set in a modified Helvetica, and it has remained the global corporate logo ever since.
- 2008: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. formally renamed itself Panasonic Corporation, unifying its worldwide brand under one name.
Colors and Font
The Panasonic logo is set in Panasonic blue, a deep corporate blue commonly matched to around #004B8D, with the “Ideas for Life” era tagline rendered in gray. Blue conveys trust, quality, and technological reliability. The wordmark is based on a modified Helvetica, very close to Helvetica Black, with slightly adjusted letterforms for a distinctive, sturdy appearance.
