About the Netflix Logo

About Netflix

Netflix was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in California as a DVD-by-mail rental service that let subscribers rent movies online and receive them through the post. In 2007, after delivering its billionth DVD, Netflix introduced on-demand streaming and pivoted from a rental company into a global entertainment platform. Today it is the world’s leading streaming service with hundreds of millions of subscribers worldwide.

Logo Meaning and History

Netflix’s logo mirrors its transformation from a DVD company into a streaming giant. The famous “N” icon features a ribbon that curves like a film strip or a television screen, nodding to the world of cinema that Netflix lives in. The dominant red color signals drama, energy, and excitement – the emotions people seek when they press play. The mark is designed to be unmistakable at any size, from a tiny app icon to a billboard.

Evolution

  • 1997: The first logo uses a playful WordArt-style design with a purple film reel separating the words “net” and “Flix.”
  • 2000: A bold new look appears: white “NETFLIX” lettering on a dramatic red background with a black shadow.
  • 2001: The red-and-white wordmark is refined and officially launched on August 20, designed by MarchFirst.
  • 2010: The logo is flattened and cleaned up, reflecting the era of digital streaming.
  • 2014: A new identity by Moving Brands debuts on June 13: a red wordmark on white plus the standalone red “N” ribbon icon.
  • 2016: The “N” icon becomes the official app and social media symbol.
  • 2018: Netflix introduces its own custom corporate typeface, Netflix Sans.

Colors and Font

Netflix Red is the brand’s defining color, officially hex #E50914 (RGB 229, 9, 20), supported by black and white. The 2014 wordmark is set in a modified Bebas Neue, a tall condensed sans-serif, while corporate communications since 2018 use the custom typeface Netflix Sans.
