About Microsoft

Microsoft was founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen under the name “Micro-Soft” — a blend of “microcomputers” and “software.” Headquartered in Redmond, Washington, it became the world’s largest software company, known for Windows, Office, the Azure cloud platform, Surface hardware, and Xbox.

Logo Meaning and History

The Microsoft identity has always mirrored its era — from a groovy 1970s design to the sharp corporate mark of the 1980s and finally the friendly, colorful tile of the modern age. The current logo, from 2012, pairs the name with a four-square tile echoing the Windows flag and expressing the diversity of the company’s products.

Evolution

  • 1975: The original “Micro-Soft” logo stacked the name on two lines in a groovy rounded typeface based on Aki Lines, designed by Simon Daniels; it lasted until 1979.
  • 1980: A short-lived redesign with sharp, diagonal lettering based on the New Zelek font reflected the era’s arcade culture; it ran until 1981.
  • 1982: A solid sans-serif wordmark in Avant Garde Gothic arrived, its letter “O” cut by horizontal lines — a feature employees nicknamed the “Blibbet.”
  • 1987: Designer Scott Baker created the “Pac-Man” logo in Helvetica Italic Black, with a slash in the first “O” and the “f” and “t” joined; it ran until 2012.
  • 2012: For the first time in 25 years, Microsoft unveiled a new logo: the name in its proprietary Segoe font beside a flat four-color tile.

Colors and Font

The four squares use red (#F25022), green (#7FBA00), blue (#00A4EF), and yellow (#FFB900) — the palette long tied to Microsoft’s brands. The wordmark is set in Segoe, Microsoft’s proprietary typeface, replacing the Helvetica Italic Black of the 1987–2012 era.
