About JSU Gamecocks
The JSU Gamecocks are the intercollegiate athletic teams of Jacksonville State University (JSU), located in Jacksonville, Alabama. The university, founded in 1883, began phasing in the “Jax State” marketing identity in January 2023, while retaining its official name. The Gamecocks compete at the NCAA Division I level as members of Conference USA (CUSA), which they joined on July 1, 2023, after moving up from the Ohio Valley Conference. Its mascot is Cocky the Gamecock; football plays at AmFirst Stadium and basketball at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Gamecock teams have won seven NCAA national championships across five sports. The football program dates to 1904 and moved up to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in 2023.
JSU Gamecocks Logo Meaning and History
Jacksonville State’s earliest teams were the “Eagle Owls,” wearing blue and gold. Before the 1947 season, the school adopted the nickname “Fighting Gamecocks” and switched its colors to red and white — the identity it carries today. A gamecock, a breed of fighting rooster, symbolizes toughness and competitive spirit. The modern mark combines the JSU monogram with Gamecock imagery, updated for the 2023 “Jax State” rebrand.
