Instagram is the photo- and video-sharing network launched in October 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. What began as an app for square photos with retro filters grew into a global social platform, acquired by Facebook in 2012 and now part of Meta. Stories and Reels made it the home of visual culture.
Its identity mirrors its product: the original logo depicted a camera, and even after the 2016 redesign, an abstract camera outline stayed at the mark’s heart.
Systrom designed Instagram’s first logo in 2010: a retro Polaroid-style camera with a rainbow stripe, a nod to instant photography. Later that year, photographer and designer Cole Rise refined it into a detailed 1950s Bell & Howell camera, the icon that carried Instagram through its early growth.
On May 11, 2016, Instagram retired the detailed camera for a minimalist glyph: a rounded-square outline with a circle and dot on a vivid gradient. The move divided users but proved a simpler mark could scale across an expanding family of apps.
The 2016 logo introduced the gradient: yellow (#FEDA75), orange (#FA7E1E), pink (#D62976), purple (#962FBF), and blue (#4F5BD5). The 2022 refresh saturated the colors so the mark feels, in the company’s words, illuminated and alive.
Instagram Sans followed in 2022, blending grotesque and geometric styles and supporting global scripts including Arabic, Thai, and Japanese.
