About the Google Meet Logo

About Google

Google is the search engine and technology company founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Its mission to organize the world’s information turned a garage startup into Alphabet’s flagship, powering Search, Android, Chrome, YouTube, and products used by billions daily.

Few logos are seen as often. The multicolored wordmark has sat on the world’s most-visited homepage for over two decades, and its playful letterforms break the rules of corporate design.

Logo Meaning and History

Google’s first logos were rough 1997-1998 experiments, including one in Baskerville Bold and one with a Yahoo-style exclamation mark. In 1999, designer Ruth Kadar set the wordmark in the serif Catull, dropped the exclamation point, and arranged the now-famous blue, red, yellow, and green letters.

The Catull wordmark survived until September 1, 2015, Google’s biggest redesign. The serif gave way to in-house Product Sans, a geometric sans-serif, while the slightly tilted “e” stayed as a nod to the company’s spirit.

Evolution

  • 1997-1998: Early logo experiments, including a Baskerville Bold version.
  • 1998: An exclamation mark is added, Yahoo!-style, then reconsidered.
  • 1999: Kadar’s Catull wordmark debuts with the blue, red, yellow, green letters that define the brand.
  • 2010: The shadow is flattened and hues refined, keeping the serif foundation.
  • 2013: The logo goes fully flat: shadows removed, lettering flattened.
  • 2015: Google switches to in-house Product Sans, drops gradients, and launches the multicolor “G” icon.
  • 2025-2026: The “G” icon gains a fluid gradient, and in May 2026 the wordmark gets subtle tweaks.

Colors and Font

Four colors are applied letter by letter: blue (#4285F4), red (#EA4335), yellow (#FBBC05), and green (#34A853). The out-of-order placement, with the secondary green on the “L,” is meant to show the company doesn’t follow conventions.

The typeface is Product Sans, Google’s own geometric sans-serif from the 2015 redesign, later evolved into Google Sans. Its rounded, open letterforms stay legible from a billboard to a watch face.
