About Gemini

Gemini is Google’s flagship artificial intelligence assistant and model family, developed by Google DeepMind and deeply integrated across Google’s products — from Search and Android to Gmail, Docs, and the standalone Gemini app. It handles conversational chat, text generation, image understanding, coding, and voice interaction, and it powers features like AI Overviews in Google Search.

The assistant began life as Bard, an experimental chatbot Google launched in February 2023 in response to the generative-AI boom. On February 8, 2024, Google renamed Bard to Gemini, aligning the product with the powerful Gemini model family announced in December 2023. The name Gemini comes from the Latin word for “twins,” a nod to the merger of Google’s Brain and DeepMind research teams that created the model — as well as NASA’s Project Gemini space program.

Logo Meaning and History

The Gemini logo is a four-pointed sparkle — a star-like shape with one long vertical point — designed to look like a glimmering light or a burst of inspiration. The sparkle is a visual metaphor for fresh ideas: it is the “aha moment” made visible, and it conveys the creative, almost magical quality Google wants associated with its AI.

The mark was also deliberately different from the classic Google “G.” Where the four-color G represents Google’s established products, the sparkle was given its own identity — originally a flowing blue-to-purple gradient — so that Gemini’s AI features would be instantly recognizable across every Google app and service.

Evolution

• 2023 – Bard launches in February with a simple “Bard” text wordmark and no dedicated symbol.
• 2023 – Google announces the Gemini model family in December, introducing the four-pointed sparkle identity.
• 2024 – Bard is renamed Gemini in February; the sparkle becomes the face of Google’s entire AI lineup in its original blue-purple gradient.
• 2025 – Google tweaks the sparkle’s colors in April to improve visibility on phone home screens.
• 2025 – A new version of the sparkle appears in mid-2025, trading the blue-purple gradient for Google’s four signature colors — blue, red, yellow, and green — tying Gemini directly to the refreshed Google “G” logo.
• 2026 – Animated, morphing gradient versions of the sparkle begin appearing across Gemini app interfaces.

Colors and Font

The Gemini wordmark is set in Google Sans, Google’s proprietary geometric typeface. The sparkle originally flowed from blue (#4285F4) into a vivid blue-violet gradient, distinguishing it from other Google products. The updated mark uses Google’s four brand colors — blue #4285F4, red #EA4335, yellow #FBBC05, and green #34A853 — blended into a single gradient, symbolizing what Google calls the “surge of AI-driven innovation” across its products.
