About Dropbox
Dropbox is a cloud storage and file-hosting service operated by Dropbox, Inc. of San Francisco. Founded in May 2007 — initially as Evenflow, Inc. — by MIT students Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi with seed funding from Y Combinator, Dropbox launched to the public in September 2008 with 2 GB of free storage. Houston conceived the idea after repeatedly forgetting his USB flash drive at MIT. A famous 3-minute demo video posted to Digg in March 2008 grew its beta waiting list from 5,000 to 75,000 overnight. The company acquired the dropbox.com domain for $300,000 in 2009, turned down an acquisition approach from Steve Jobs, and went public in March 2018.
Dropbox Logo Meaning and History
The Dropbox logo is an open box viewed from above — a literal, instantly readable symbol of a drop box where you place files for safekeeping and sharing. The open-top box suggests accessibility and openness: your files go in, and they are available everywhere. It is one of tech’s most successful literal logos, turning the company’s name into a simple geometric mark recognised worldwide.
Dropbox Logo Evolution
- 2007: Dropbox is founded as Evenflow, Inc., with an early box-based identity.
- 2008: The public launch brings the blue open-box logo to millions of new users.
- 2017: A major rebrand flattens the box into a bolder, more abstract geometric mark in a brighter Dropbox blue.
- 2020s: The flat blue box continues as the face of Dropbox’s collaboration and cloud-storage suite.
Dropbox Logo Colors and Font
The brand’s signature color is Dropbox blue (#0061FF) — a vivid, confident blue — paired with white and dark neutrals. The wordmark uses a clean, rounded custom sans-serif that matches the friendly geometry of the box. The flat vector artwork scales perfectly, so whether you need a dropbox logo png with a transparent background or a dropbox logo svg vector, the mark stays crisp at any size.
