About the Citi Logo
Introduction
Four blue lowercase letters and one red arc — the Citi logo is one of the most famous pieces of graphic design in banking. No shield, no serif, no formality: just a name and a smile of red, drawn in seconds and recognised on every continent.
Brand Overview
Citi (Citibank) is the consumer banking arm of Citigroup, with roots in the City Bank of New York, founded in 1812. Headquartered in New York City, Citi serves around 200 million customer accounts in more than 160 countries and jurisdictions, and its cards, branches, and apps carry the blue wordmark worldwide. In 1998 its parent Citicorp merged with Travelers Group to form Citigroup — the deal that made the current brand necessary. Its official website is citi.com.
History of the Citi Logo
The logo was designed in 1998 by Paula Scher of Pentagram for the newly merged Citigroup. Her starting point was the Travelers red umbrella: she reduced it to a single red arc and set it over a lowercase blue wordmark — famously sketching the idea on a napkin in the first meeting. In 2007 the full “Citibank” lettering was shortened to the name everyone already used — citi — and the umbrella disappeared entirely, leaving the arc as its ghost. That is the current logo, the version in this download.
Meaning of the Logo
- The red arc: The umbrella, abstracted to one stroke — shelter and protection, drawn as a smile.
- The lowercase name: A bank speaking in lower case: approachable, digital, human — a deliberate break from marble-column banking.
- Citi blue: A bright, confident blue that separates Citi from the navy of its rivals.
Citi Logo Colors
| Color | Hex Code | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| Citi Blue | #255BE3 | The wordmark (the logo file’s own fill value) |
| Citi Red | #FF3C28 | The arc (the logo file’s own fill value) |
| White | #FFFFFF | Backgrounds and reversed applications |
The blue and red are the exact fills of the current artwork — a pairing Citi has kept untouched since the arc replaced the umbrella.
Conclusion
Citi’s logo is a billion-dollar merger drawn on a napkin: four letters, one red arc, and an umbrella you’ll never see again but always remember.
