About CD-i
CD-i (Compact Disc Interactive) was an interactive multimedia CD player developed and marketed by Royal Philips Electronics. Work on the format began in 1984, it was publicly announced in 1986, and the first consumer player — the Philips CDI 910/205 — launched in late 1991 (US launch October 1991, Europe and Japan in 1992), priced around $1,000. Based on the Green Book standard co-developed by Philips and Sony, CD-i players were complete computer systems running the CD-RTOS operating system, capable of playing interactive discs, audio CDs, Photo CDs, and Video CDs. Marketed first as home entertainment systems and later as a gaming platform — including infamously licensed Nintendo titles like Hotel Mario — the format was largely abandoned by Philips in 1996 and discontinued in 1998.
CD-i Logo Meaning and History
The CD-i logo is a compact, technical wordmark — the letters CD joined to a lowercase i for interactive — capturing Philips’ ambition to turn the compact disc from a music medium into an interactive multimedia platform. The mark appeared on players from Philips, Sony, Matsushita, and other members of the 200-strong CD-i consortium, as well as on every disc in the format’s library of games, encyclopedias, and edutainment titles.
CD-i Logo Evolution
- 1986: Philips publicly announces the CD-i format and the Green Book standard, introducing the CD-i identity.
- 1991: The first Philips CD-i players reach consumers, carrying the CD-i logo into living rooms.
- 1992-1995: The mark spreads across hundreds of titles — from interactive encyclopedias to the notorious Nintendo-licensed games.
- 1996-1998: Philips abandons the format; the CD-i logo becomes a retro emblem of 1990s multimedia ambition.
CD-i Logo Colors and Font
The CD-i wordmark is typically rendered in solid black or white — a no-nonsense technical logo with clean, geometric letterforms and the distinctive lowercase i. The flat, monochrome artwork is ideal for vector reproduction, so whether you need a cd-i logo png with a transparent background or a cd-i logo svg for retro-gaming projects, the mark stays sharp at any size.
