About BMW
BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke, or Bavarian Motor Works) is a German premium automaker headquartered in Munich. Founded in 1916 as an aircraft engine manufacturer, the company moved into motorcycles in 1923 and cars in 1928. Today it builds performance-oriented luxury cars under the BMW name and also owns MINI and Rolls-Royce, standing alongside Mercedes-Benz and Audi as one of Germany’s big three premium marques.
The brand is known for sharp handling, powerful engines, and the slogan “The Ultimate Driving Machine.” Its high-performance models come from the M division, founded in 1972, while the “i” sub-brand covers its growing electric lineup.
Logo Meaning and History
The roundel shows the letters “BMW” on a black outer ring around four alternating blue and white quadrants, the colors of the Bavarian flag in reverse order. Many believe the inner circle depicts a spinning airplane propeller, a myth that grew out of a 1929 advertisement. In reality, the badge was adapted from the circular emblem of Rapp Motorenwerke, BMW’s predecessor, and honors the company’s Bavarian roots.
Evolution
- 1917 – The first roundel appears: blue-and-white quadrants inside a black ring lettered “BMW.”
- 1923 – The ring is refined with a thin gold outline and clearer lettering.
- 1933 – The letters are restyled and the ring becomes bolder.
- 1963 – The emblem is streamlined with wider letter spacing.
- 1997 – A glossy 3D chrome finish is added for a more premium look.
- 2020 – The logo goes flat and minimalist with a transparent background for digital use.
Colors and Font
The logo uses Bavarian blue (#0066B1) with white (#FFFFFF) quadrants and a black (#000000) outer ring. The “BMW” lettering is set in the company’s custom corporate typeface, BMW Type, a geometric sans-serif that reflects the brand’s precise, technical character.
