AXA is a French multinational insurance and financial services group headquartered in Paris, present in 64 countries with over 160,000 employees. Its origins trace to the early 19th century and a small mutual insurer from Normandy, the Ancienne Mutuelle de Rouen (1816). The AXA brand launched in July 1985; Interbrand rated AXA the world’s most valuable insurance brand for nine consecutive years, and in 2023 it ranked 48th in the Forbes Global 2000. The AXA name has been used by the group’s operations in New Zealand.
Although written in capitals, “AXA” is not an acronym and stands for nothing. After the Drouot Group takeover in 1982, chairman Claude Bébéar commissioned a computer-assisted search for a short name that would be pronounced the same way in any language. The first choice, “Elan,” was dropped when Canadian executives noted élan is French for moose — so Bébéar chose AXA: short, memorable, and reading the same backwards.
The AXA logo is a confident all-caps wordmark in the brand’s signature blue — a color associated with trust and financial security — often paired with the group’s distinctive red slash device.
