Avis Car Rental, LLC is a global car rental company headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey. A unit of Avis Budget Group — alongside Budget Rent a Car, Budget Truck Rental, and Zipcar — Avis operates around 5,500 locations across 165 countries. The company was founded in 1946 by Warren Avis with just three cars at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and became the first car rental business located at an airport. Today it serves business travelers at major airports internationally and leisure travelers at off-airport locations.
Avis Logo Meaning and History
The Avis brand is inseparable from one of advertising’s most famous slogans: “We Try Harder.” Adopted in 1962 during CEO Robert Townsend’s tenure, the campaign turned Avis’s position as the second-largest US car rental company into a virtue — promising harder-working service than the bigger rival Hertz. The slogan ran for 50 years before a 2012 rebranding introduced “It’s Your Space.”
