Aveda Corporation is an American cosmetics company founded by Horst Rechelbacher in 1978 in Blaine, Minnesota, and now headquartered in Minneapolis. Owned by Estée Lauder Companies since 1997, Aveda manufactures skin and body care, cosmetics, fragrance (internally called “pure-fume”), hair color, and hair care products, and trains students in cosmetology, massage, and esthiology at Aveda Institutes across North America. According to the company, “Aveda” is Sanskrit for “all knowledge.”

On a 1970 trip to India, founder Horst Rechelbacher was introduced to Ayurvedic science, and his vision for the company was born — he formulated the first product, a clove shampoo, in his kitchen sink with the help of Ayurvedic doctors Vinod and Kusum Upadhyay.
