Founded in 1961 by Gérard Mulliez, who opened the first store in Roubaix’s Hauts-Champs district — the name “Auchan” is the phonetic spelling of “Hauts Champs” — the company has grown into one of the world’s largest retailers, operating thousands of hypermarkets, supermarkets, and convenience stores across countries including France, Spain (as Alcampo), Poland, Romania, Portugal, and Senegal. Still Mulliez-family controlled, Auchan sells food, clothing, electronics, and household goods.

The most beloved element of the Auchan identity is the robin nestled inside the letter “A.” Introduced in 1983 and affectionately called the “A-bird,” the stylized red bird replaces the crossbar of the “A,” symbolizing the brand’s sympathy and closeness to its customers — a touchpoint between the store and the shopper. The name also echoes the French “au chant” — birdsong, a “dawn bird” greeting. In 2015, agency The Imageniers redrew the robin rounder and friendlier, paired with a custom typeface made with Production Type.
