About Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks are a professional basketball team in the NBA’s Eastern Conference, based in Atlanta, Georgia. The franchise was founded in 1946 and played as the Buffalo Bisons, Tri-Cities Blackhawks, Milwaukee Hawks, and St. Louis Hawks before moving to Atlanta in 1968. The Pac-Man logo era coincided with stars like Dominique Wilkins and Spud Webb, whose Slam Dunk Contest heroics in the 1980s made the mark famous with a generation of fans.

Atlanta Hawks Logo Meaning and History

The Hawks’ most beloved mark is the Pac-Man logo — a hawk’s head in profile formed by negative space, resembling the classic video game character. Introduced in 1972 and used through 1995, it became iconic during the Dominique Wilkins era. After a 1996–2015 detour featuring a front-facing hawk spreading its wings, fan nostalgia brought the Pac-Man back as the primary logo in 2015, now enclosed in a roundel reading Atlanta Hawks Basketball.
