About Arizona State University

Arizona State University (ASU) is a public research university based in Tempe, Arizona, and one of the largest universities in the US with more than 160,000 students. Established in 1885 as the Territorial Normal School for teacher training, it passed through names like Tempe State Teachers College and Arizona State College (1945) before becoming a university in 1958. Today ASU operates campuses across the Phoenix metropolitan area and ranks among America’s most innovative universities. Its athletic teams, the Sun Devils, compete in NCAA Division I, and its mascot is Sparky the Sun Devil.

Arizona State University Logo Meaning and History

ASU’s visual identity centers on two marks: the bold “ASU” lettermark and the Sun Devil pitchfork — a trident-like symbol carried by the mascot, Sparky. The pitchfork reflects the heat and spirit of the Arizona desert, while Sparky — the maroon imp designed by Disney illustrator Berk Anthony — embodies Sun Devil athletics. The “Sun Devils” nickname came from the desert “dust devils” and was adopted by student vote in 1946.
