ASICS is a Japanese multinational athletic footwear and apparel company headquartered in Kobe, Japan. It began in 1949 as Onitsuka Co., Ltd., when founder Kihachiro Onitsuka started manufacturing basketball shoes in his living room. The company gained worldwide fame through Olympic sports in the 1950s-1970s, and its Mexico 66 design (1966) introduced the now-iconic crossed stripes.
