The Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of Australia’s most important art museums, located in The Domain in Sydney beside the Royal Botanic Garden. It was founded on 24 April 1871 by a group of 30 art enthusiasts as the New South Wales Academy of Art and was rededicated under its current name in 1880. Its collection spans Australian, Asian, and international art. In December 2022 the gallery opened a major expansion, the Sydney Modern project, doubling its exhibition space; in 2024 the two buildings were given Aboriginal-language names, Naala Badu (“seeing waters”) and Naala Nura (“seeing country”).
In 2022 the gallery unveiled a new brand identity created by the studio Mucho. The system is built around a dynamic device of three open frames – a subtle allusion to layering – that holds together the three parts of the gallery’s name and acts as a “frame” in which artworks, events, and ideas are presented, reflecting the gallery’s repositioning as a meeting point and cultural hub.
The 2022 identity introduced a strict type and colour system built around neutral framing devices that let the collection’s artworks supply the color.
