The Arkansas State Indians was the athletic nickname of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas, used from 1931 until 2008. Facing NCAA restrictions on Native American mascots and imagery, the university retired the Indians identity and adopted the Red Wolves in 2008. The Red Wolves name was selected by a mascot steering committee in January 2008, approved by the NCAA in March 2008, and unveiled with a new logo that same month, ending one of college sports’ most debated rebrands.
The “Indians” name, chosen by students in 1931, was long represented by the caricature mascot “Jumpin’ Joe” and later “Running Joe.” After the NCAA listed the school’s imagery among those deemed hostile and abusive in 2005, Arkansas State declined to appeal and instead chose a new identity rooted in the region’s wildlife – the red wolf.
The historic identity used the university’s colors, scarlet and black, in a bold collegiate wordmark style.
