About Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are a professional American football team competing in the NFL’s NFC West division and playing their home games at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Founded in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club in Chicago, the Cardinals are the oldest continuously run professional football team in the United States and a charter member of the NFL, established in 1920. The franchise played in Chicago until 1960, moved to St. Louis for 28 seasons, relocated to Arizona in 1988 as the Phoenix Cardinals, and adopted the name Arizona Cardinals in 1994. The team won NFL championships in 1925 and 1947 and made its first Super Bowl appearance in the 2008 season, losing Super Bowl XLIII to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Arizona Cardinals Logo Meaning and History

The “Cardinals” name dates back to 1901, when team founder Chris O’Brien bought a set of faded maroon jerseys that he described as cardinal red. The logo depicts the head of a northern cardinal, the songbird behind the team’s identity, rendered in a bold, aggressive profile that has become one of the most recognizable bird marks in sports.

Arizona Cardinals Logo Evolution

  • 1920-1934 – As the Chicago Cardinals, the team used interlocking red “C” letterforms.
  • 1947-1959 – The logo became a brownish-black cardinal perched on the laces of a white football.
  • 1960-1969 – After the move to St. Louis, the mark showed a muscular cartoon cardinal in football gear running past the Gateway Arch.
  • 1970-2004 – A streamlined cardinal head, designed by Verlander Design, replaced the mascot character.
  • 2005 – The current logo debuted: a fiercer bird with a yellow beak, brighter cardinal-red plumage, and a heavier black outline.

Arizona Cardinals Logo Colors and Font

The identity is built on cardinal red (about #97233F), black, and white. The emblem needs no lettering – the bird’s head alone carries the brand. Whether you need an arizona cardinals logo png with a transparent background or an arizona cardinals logo svg vector for crisp scaling, the flat red-and-black artwork stays sharp at any size.
