AOL (originally America Online) is a web portal and former online service provider based in New York City. Its history began in 1983 with the Control Video Corporation, founded by William von Meister, which became Quantum Computer Services in 1985 and was renamed America Online in 1989. AOL grew into the largest online service of the 1990s, ahead of CompuServe and Prodigy, pioneering dial-up internet access, chat rooms, and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). In 1998 it acquired Netscape for $4.2 billion, and in 2001 it bought Time Warner in what was then the largest merger in U.S. history. Spun off in 2009, AOL was acquired by Verizon in 2015, then by Apollo Global Management in 2021, and by Bending Spoons in 2026.
