About ANSI
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private nonprofit organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards for products, services, processes, systems, and personnel in the United States. It was formed on October 19, 1918, as the American Engineering Standards Committee, founded by five engineering societies — including the ancestors of today’s IEEE, ASME, and ASTM — together with the U.S. Departments of War, Navy, and Commerce. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., ANSI accredits the procedures of standards-developing organizations rather than writing standards itself, and it is the official U.S. representative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Approximately 9,500 American National Standards carry the ANSI designation.
ANSI Logo Meaning and History
The ANSI acronym has stood behind American industry for over a century, from the first Fortran programming language standard and ANSI C to film speed ratings and safety eyewear certifications. The bold blue wordmark signals the authority and neutrality of the voluntary consensus process that American manufacturers, engineers, and consumers rely on.
