AMVESCAP PLC was a London-based global investment management company created in 1997 by the merger of two asset management businesses: INVESCO, founded in 1978 in Atlanta by Charles W. Brady and eight partners who purchased the pension management department of their employer, and AIM, founded in 1976 in Houston by Charles T. Bauer, Robert H. Graham, and Gary T. Crum. The combination created one of the first truly global independent retail and institutional investment managers, with roughly $200 billion in assets under management. Listed on the London and New York stock exchanges, the company changed its name to Invesco Ltd. in 2007, retiring the AMVESCAP name.
The AMVESCAP name itself was a portmanteau of its two predecessor firms — AIM and INVESCO. The corporate wordmark projected the scale and international reach of the merged group, appearing on fund documents, offices, and shareholder communications across North America, Europe, and Asia throughout the decade the name was in use.
The AMVESCAP wordmark was rendered in a deep corporate blue and gray, conveying institutional trust and financial stability. The all-caps serif lettering gave the mark a formal, established feel suited to a global asset manager.
