Amgen Inc. is an American multinational biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Thousand Oaks, California, and one of the world’s largest biotechnology companies. It was founded in April 1980 as Applied Molecular Genetics, backed by venture capitalists with an early focus on recombinant DNA technology and recombinant human insulin. The company shortened its name to Amgen around its 1983 initial public offering and went on to pioneer landmark medicines: Epogen (epoetin alfa), approved in 1989 as the first recombinant human erythropoietin product, and Neupogen (filgrastim), approved in 1991. The name “Amgen” is a portmanteau of the company’s original name, Applied Molecular Genetics.
