America’s Choice was the private-label grocery brand of A&P — the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, once America’s largest supermarket chain. Launched by A&P in 1994 as the value tier of its store-brand lineup (with Master Choice as the premium tier), America’s Choice covered everyday groceries from meats and frozen foods to jams, cereals and household goods. Sister chain Pathmark later switched its private-label meats from the Pathmark brand to America’s Choice. When A&P filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2015, the America’s Choice trademark was offered for sale along with the A&P, Pathmark, Waldbaum’s and other banners by intellectual-property agent Hilco Streambank.
The name promised exactly what it said: America’s everyday choice — quality store-brand groceries at a popular price. A&P’s “Freedom of Choice” sale ads even pictured the Statue of Liberty holding an A&P shopping bag stuffed with America’s Choice items, tying the brand to patriotic value.
