The Alabama State Hornets are the athletic teams of Alabama State University, a public historically Black university (HBCU) in Montgomery, Alabama. The university was founded in 1867 in Marion as the Lincoln Normal School, moved to Montgomery in 1887, and became Alabama State University in 1969. The Hornets compete in NCAA Division I — FCS for football — as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), which they joined in 1982. The football program’s first season was 1901, and the Hornets claimed a black college national championship in 1991 along with SWAC titles in 1991 and 2004. Home football games are played at ASU Stadium.
The Hornets nickname reflects defensive tenacity and teamwork — the hornet’s ability to compete effectively regardless of size resonates with the university’s identity as an HBCU competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics. The mascot is Stinger the hornet, and the school colors are black and old gold.
The Hornets identity is built on black and old gold — the hornet’s own warning colors. The illustrated hornet mark pairs golden-yellow and black striping with gray wing and leg detailing, a fierce mascot emblem in the classic collegiate style.
