About Advest
Advest Group Inc. was a Hartford, Connecticut-based retail brokerage and financial services firm whose own logo proclaimed “Serving Investors Since 1898”. The firm operated three main businesses — retail brokerage, capital markets and investment banking, and asset management through Boston Advisors — employing around 1,560 people with offices concentrated in the northeastern United States. On September 14, 2005, Merrill Lynch agreed to acquire Advest from AXA Financial for $400 million as a complement to its private-client business; the transaction closed in December 2005, bringing Advest’s 515 financial advisers onto the Merrill Lynch platform.
