ACS is the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society, founded in 1876 in New York City and now headquartered in Washington, D.C. With members across all fields of chemistry, ACS publishes the flagship Journal of the American Chemical Society (since 1879), operates the Chemical Abstracts Service, and publishes Chemical & Engineering News. Reincorporated under a congressional charter signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937, the society supports chemistry education, research, and careers worldwide — and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2026.
The historic ACS emblem was designed in the early 20th century by Tiffany’s Jewelers (Tiffany & Co.) and adopted in 1909. Its central symbol is a stylized kaliapparat — the small triangular glass apparatus invented by German chemist Justus von Liebig around 1830, which enabled the first precise quantification of carbon in organic compounds and helped launch modern organic chemistry. The square badge also features a phoenix rising from flames above the apparatus, symbolizing energy and renewal. For the society’s 150th anniversary in 2026, ACS unveiled an evolved brand identity while honoring this century-old heritage.
The historic emblem pairs gold (the phoenix and flames) with cobalt blue (the lower half) in a distinctive square badge — fire and water, the key elements of chemistry. Whether you need an acs logo png with a transparent background or an acs logo svg vector for educational materials, the badge’s bold two-tone design reproduces beautifully at any size.
