About ACME

The Acme Corporation is a fictional mega-corporation that features prominently in Warner Bros.’ Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons, most famously as the supplier of Wile E. Coyote’s endless arsenal of outlandish products. From rocket-powered roller skates to giant rubber bands “for tripping Road Runners,” Acme delivers everything by mail-order crate — and everything fails catastrophically at the worst possible moment. The name is a joke in itself: “acme” comes from the Greek akmē, meaning peak, zenith or prime, while the company’s products are famously generic and failure-prone.

ACME Logo Meaning and History

Animator Chuck Jones explained the name’s origin: in the 1920s, businesses rushed to call themselves “Acme” so they would appear first in alphabetical Yellow Pages listings — “because ‘AC’ was about as high as you could go.” Jones and his childhood friends had called their imaginary grocery stores the ACME corporation for the same reason. The classic Acme logo is the bold, no-nonsense stencil lettering stamped on the wooden crates that drop from the sky into Wile E. Coyote’s hands — a mark of instant, ask-no-questions delivery.

Evolution of the ACME Logo

• 1920s: Real-world businesses adopt the Acme name to top Yellow Pages listings; early Sears catalogs sell Acme-branded anvils.
• 1930s: Acme makes early cartoon appearances, including the Buddy cartoon Buddy’s Bug Hunt.
• 1949: The Road Runner era begins; Acme becomes Wile E. Coyote’s sole supplier, billed in one cartoon as “Acme Rocket-Powered Products, Inc.” of Fairfield, New Jersey.
• 2000s: Acme cameos continue across Warner Bros. films, TV and comics as pop culture’s favorite fictional conglomerate.
