AC Delco Systems was a General Motors automotive parts division formed in 1994 from the merger of GM’s AC Rochester Division and Delco Remy Division. It united two historic GM parts legacies: the AC spark plug business founded on Albert Champion’s designs, and Delco, the Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company co-founded by Charles Kettering. In 1995, AC Delco Systems was absorbed by Delphi Automotive Systems, and the parts brand was rebranded as ACDelco — the hyphen dropped — which remains GM’s global automotive parts brand today, sold for both GM and non-GM vehicles from its headquarters in Warren, Michigan.
The AC Delco Systems identity fused two legendary GM marks. “AC” came from Albert Champion, the French bicycle racer who built spark plugs for Buick in Flint, Michigan, before General Motors bought AC Spark Plugs in 1927. “Delco” came from the Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company, whose electric starters, lighting and ignition equipment powered early automobiles.
The Delco heritage mark was a red-and-blue semicircular logo designed by Lance Wyman, paired with AC’s bullseye motif, and the 1995 ACDelco rebrand carried the red-and-blue identity forward into a modern wordmark.
