About Django

Django is a free and open-source Python-based web framework for building complex, database-driven websites. It was created in the autumn of 2003 by web programmers Adrian Holovaty and Simon Willison at the Lawrence Journal-World newspaper — with Jacob Kaplan-Moss joining early in development — and released publicly under a BSD license in July 2005. Named after jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, the framework follows the model-template-views (MTV) pattern and is maintained by the Django Software Foundation, a US non-profit established in June 2008. Django powers major sites including Instagram, Mozilla, Disqus, Bitbucket, and Nextdoor.

Django Logo Meaning and History

The Django logo is a simple, lowercase django wordmark — understated and confident, like the framework itself. The name honours Django Reinhardt, the legendary Romani jazz guitarist admired by co-creator Adrian Holovaty, himself a jazz guitar player. The no-frills identity mirrors the project’s philosophy: less code, low coupling, rapid development, and don’t repeat yourself.

Django Logo Evolution

  • 2003: Django is created at the Lawrence Journal-World to power news websites.
  • 2005: Released publicly under a BSD license, the lowercase django wordmark debuts with the framework.
  • 2008: The Django Software Foundation is formed to steward the project, standardising the brand.
  • 2010s-2020s: As Django powers Instagram and a generation of startups, the flat dark-green wordmark becomes one of open source’s most recognised marks.

Django Logo Colors and Font

The Django identity is defined by its deep, dark green (#092E20) — a rich, near-black green — set against white or light backgrounds. The lowercase wordmark uses a distinctive custom serif-influenced typeface that gives the framework its classic, trustworthy feel. The flat vector artwork scales perfectly, so whether you need a django logo png with a transparent background or a django logo svg vector for developer documentation, the mark stays crisp.
