About YouTube

YouTube is the world’s most popular online video platform, where billions of people watch, upload, and share videos every day. It was founded on February 14, 2005, by former PayPal employees Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, with the first-ever upload, “Me at the zoo,” posted on April 23, 2005. Google acquired YouTube in November 2006, and it now operates as a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. from its headquarters in San Bruno, California.

YouTube Logo Meaning and History

The YouTube logo joins the words “You” and “Tube” — a playful nod to “tube” as old slang for a television — capturing the platform’s original slogan, “Broadcast Yourself.” The visual identity was created by co-founder Chad Hurley. The iconic red play button at the heart of the logo symbolizes video playback itself, and has become one of the most recognized symbols on the internet, standing for creators and viewers sharing moments with a global audience.

Evolution of the YouTube Logo

• 2005: The original logo featured the “YouTube” wordmark with the word “Tube” set inside a rounded red rectangle, under the “Broadcast Yourself” slogan.
• 2011: The slogan was dropped and the design was quietly refined.
• 2013–2015: The red element picked up a glossy gradient finish, then returned to a flat look in 2015.
• 2017: The first major redesign in over a decade moved the red play button to the left of the wordmark and brightened the red to a pure #FF0000.
• 2024: The logo was softened with a lighter wordmark, a rounder play button, and a gentler red (#FF0033), rolling out globally in October 2024.

YouTube Logo Colors and Font

The brand’s signature color is YouTube Red (#FF0000 in the 2017 logo, softened to #FF0033 in the 2024 update), paired with a near-black wordmark. The wordmark uses a custom typeface called YouTube New, adapted from a classic condensed media style, which keeps the logo sharp and legible on everything from giant screens to tiny app icons. Whether you need a youtube logo png with a transparent background or a youtube logo svg vector for crisp scaling, the flat red-and-black artwork stays recognizable at any size.
