Reebok is a British-American footwear and apparel brand founded in 1958 in Bolton, England, by brothers Joe and Jeff Foster as a companion company to J.W. Foster and Sons, the sporting goods firm their grandfather had founded in 1895. The name comes from the Afrikaans spelling of “rhebok,” a South African antelope, chosen to suggest speed and agility. Reebok rose to global fame in the 1980s with the Freestyle aerobics shoe and later icons like the Club C and the Pump basketball shoe, and it is now owned by Authentic Brands Group with its headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts.
Reebok’s first logo featured the flag of the United Kingdom, honoring the brand’s English origins. In 1986 the company replaced the flag with the “Vector” — an abstract Union Jack streaked across a race track, mirroring the side flashes on Reebok shoes — signaling the company’s shift to a global performance brand. In 2014 Reebok retired the Vector for the “Delta,” a triangular symbol representing the physical, mental, and social changes that fitness brings. The Vector returned with the 2019 rebrand and remains in use on Reebok Classic products.
The classic Vector logo is most often seen in red and blue, echoing the Union Jack of Reebok’s original identity, while the modern mark is typically rendered in solid black or white. The famous 1977 wordmark was set in Motter Tektura, a typeface whose wide, rounded letterforms became synonymous with Reebok during the 1980s aerobics boom.
