Assedic — the Association pour l’emploi dans l’industrie et le commerce — was the French agency responsible for collecting and paying unemployment insurance, created in 1958. For five decades, it was the institution French workers turned to when they lost their jobs, operating through 30 local Assédic offices and more than 600 branches across France. The agency managed the unemployment insurance scheme jointly run by employers and unions, a cornerstone of the French social model. In 2009, Assedic merged with the ANPE (the national employment agency) to form Pôle emploi, creating a single public body for jobseekers. The Assedic name remains deeply familiar to generations of French workers.
The Assedic logo was a public-sector wordmark designed to communicate trust, accessibility, and institutional reliability to millions of French citizens. Government and social-agency logos of the era typically used clear, sturdy typography in blue or red — colors associated with the French republic and public service — to project authority without intimidation. The mark appeared on office signage, official correspondence, benefit statements, and public-information campaigns throughout France. When Assedic became part of Pôle emploi in 2009, the logo was retired, but it remains a recognizable symbol of France’s post-war welfare state and is still widely referenced in discussions of French labor history.
