About TikTok

TikTok is a short-form video platform developed by ByteDance (TikTok Pte. Ltd.). ByteDance was founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming. The app launched in China as Douyin in September 2016, went international as TikTok in September 2017, and merged with Musical.ly in 2018. It surpassed two billion mobile downloads in April 2020 and is now one of the world’s most popular social media platforms.

TikTok Logo Meaning and History

The TikTok logo is a stylized musical note rendered with a chromatic aberration effect, where red and cyan outlines are offset against white to create a glitchy 3D look. It was designed by an unnamed in-house ByteDance designer inspired by live rock concerts: the black field suggests a dark venue, while the cyan and red echo stage lighting. The note nods to the app’s music and lip-sync roots, and the letter d shape recalls its original name, Douyin.

Evolution of the TikTok Logo

• 2016: The original Douyin logo introduced the stylized musical note mark.
• 2017: The global TikTok version added an English wordmark spelled as two separated words, Tik Tok.
• 2018: The wordmark was refined into the single word TikTok with tighter letterspacing and the custom TikTok Sans typeface, while the iconic note symbol stayed essentially unchanged.
