Domino’s Pizza is the largest pizza chain in the world by sales, founded in 1960 when brothers Tom and James Monaghan bought a small pizzeria called DomiNick’s in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Tom bought out his brother for a Volkswagen Beetle and built an empire on a simple promise: hot pizza delivered fast. Today Domino’s operates more than 20,000 stores across 90-plus countries, pioneering innovations like the Pizza Tracker, emoji ordering, and delivery by drone and autonomous car. Its technology investments have made it as much a tech company as a restaurant chain, with most orders now placed digitally.
The Domino’s logo is one of fast food’s most iconic marks: a tilted domino tile split between red and blue, with three white dots. Company lore says the single dot on the red half represents the original store, while the two dots on the blue half were meant to multiply with each new location, a plan founder Tom Monaghan abandoned after rapid expansion made counting impossible. The 2012 rebrand dropped the word pizza to signal a broader menu, though the beloved domino remains untouched.
