Atari is the pioneering video game brand that launched the modern arcade and home-console industry. It was founded in 1972 by engineers Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney — originally as Syzygy Engineering — and incorporated as Atari in June 1972 in California. Its game Pong became the first commercially successful arcade hit, and the Atari 2600 (1977) brought swappable-cartridge consoles into living rooms worldwide. The name “Atari” comes from a term in the game Go, roughly meaning “to hit the target.” Today the brand is owned by the French company Atari SA.
The famous “Fuji” symbol was designed in 1972–73 by graphic designer George Opperman, Atari’s first in-house artist. It forms a stylized letter “A,” with its three prongs representing a game of Pong: the two outer curves are the opposing players and the center line is the middle of the Pong court. Its resemblance to Japan’s Mount Fuji earned it the enduring “Fuji” nickname.
The classic identity pairs the red Fuji with a simple black or white background, alongside a bold custom wordmark. Whether you need an atari logo png with a transparent background or an atari logo svg vector for crisp scaling, the flat red artwork stays recognizable at any size.
