About Apache
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) is an American nonprofit corporation that supports open-source software projects. Formed from the developers of the Apache HTTP Server and incorporated on March 25, 1999, the foundation is a decentralized community of developers whose software — including the Apache HTTP Server, Hadoop, Kafka, and Spark — is distributed under the permissive Apache License. The ASF operates as a meritocracy, granting membership to volunteers who actively contribute to its projects, and today stewards hundreds of top-level projects.
Apache Logo Meaning and History
The Apache logo is the famous multicolor feather — a stylized Native American-style feather that has symbolized the foundation since its early days. The name “Apache” is often said to come from “a patchy” web server, built from a series of patches to the NCSA HTTPd code, and the feather gives the technical brand a distinctive, organic identity among software logos.
Evolution of the Apache Logo
- 1995: The Apache HTTP Server is released by the Apache Group, quickly becoming the web’s dominant server.
- 1999: The Apache Software Foundation is incorporated to steward the projects and the Apache brand.
- 2004: The Apache License 2.0 is published, becoming one of open source’s most adopted licenses.
- 2000s–2010s: The feather logo flies over landmark projects from Hadoop to Kafka to Spark.
- Today: The feather remains the emblem of one of open source’s most influential foundations.
Apache Logo Colors and Font
