The Alabama Crimson Tide is the athletic program of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa — one of college sports’ great dynasties. The university was founded in 1831, and its football team played its first season in 1892. The Crimson Tide competes in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), plays home games at Bryant–Denny Stadium, and claims 18 national championships in football, with legendary coaches including Paul “Bear” Bryant. The program’s mascot is Big Al the elephant, and its teams wear the school colors of crimson and white.
The nickname “Crimson Tide” was coined in 1907 by Birmingham Age-Herald sportswriter Hugh Roberts, who used it to describe Alabama’s play after a 6-6 tie with Auburn played in thick red mud. The program’s iconic script “A” — a flowing cursive capital — is one of the most recognizable marks in college sports, projecting tradition and authority without clutter.
The identity is built on crimson and white — the deep red that literally names the program, paired with clean white. The cursive script “A” is a custom letterform, confident and traditional, instantly identifying Alabama on helmets, uniforms, and merchandise worldwide.
