Acura is the luxury and performance vehicle division of Honda, launched on March 27, 1986 — the first Japanese luxury automotive brand, created for the North American market. Its initial lineup of the executive-class Legend and compact Integra, sold through 60 new dealerships, was a hit under the slogan “Precision Crafted Automobiles.” The brand later introduced icons including the NSX supercar, the MDX and RDX SUVs, and today’s “Precision Crafted Performance” lineup with Type S performance models. The name derives from the Latin “acutus,” meaning “to sharpen.”

The Acura logo, introduced in 1990 for the 1991 model year, is — according to Honda — a caliper: the precise measuring tool representing the meticulous attention to detail that goes into every car. The mark can also be read as a stylized “A” for Acura or a skewed “H” for Honda. In a famous bit of brand lore, the first 5,000 badges were produced without the small horizontal bar joining the two pillars — and Soichiro Honda ordered them all destroyed, including prying emblems off 309 already-built cars, before the corrected logo was approved.
