About Ace Hardware
Ace Hardware Corporation is the world’s largest hardware retail cooperative, headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois. Founded in 1924 in Chicago as “Ace Stores” by five hardware retailers — Richard Hesse, E. Gunnard Lindquist, Frank Burke, Oscar Fisher, and William Stauber — they united to create a purchasing organization for independent stores. It became Ace Hardware Corporation in 1931, its name honoring the ace fighter pilots of World War I. After longtime president Richard Hesse retired in 1973, Ace was sold to its retailers, becoming a retailer-owned cooperative. Today the co-op runs more than 5,800 stores in roughly 60 countries, guided by its famous slogan, “The helpful place.”
Ace Hardware Logo Meaning and History
The current Ace Hardware logo is a bold red “ACE” wordmark, with the letter “A” cleverly formed as a solid red triangle — a nod to the triangular insignia of military fighter pilots. The letters lean forward in a slightly italicized style, suggesting momentum and helpful energy. A small “helpful” tagline beneath reinforces the brand’s promise.
